Coffee has run through Ueshima since 1933, when Tadao Ueshima opened a small coffee business in the port city of Kobe. Ninety years on, the same obsession still shapes every bag we roast: precision sourcing, precision roasting, precision blending. This is the story behind the beans; where they're grown, why we choose Arabica alone, how our Coffee Masters roast them, and how to find the blend that's right for you.
Guide to Ueshima Coffee Beans
Origins, Blends & the Art of Japanese Roasting...
Every Ueshima coffee starts in the bean belt which is the equatorial stretch of countries between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, where altitude, rainfall and heat align to grow exceptional coffee. Within it, we source predominantly from Brazil and Colombia, through relationships with farmers and cooperatives built over years, not seasons. The same generational thinking we bring to the roast.
Every one of our specialist blends; Tokyo Roast, House Blend and Fuji Mountain is 100% Rainforest Alliance Certified: independently verified for farming that protects forests, treats workers fairly, and helps growing communities build a more secure future. Our decaf carries Fairtrade certification, guaranteeing producers receive at least the Fairtrade Minimum Price, plus a premium reinvested in their own communities.
Why We Use 100% Arabica at Ueshima
Commercial coffee comes from two species. Robusta is hardier, higher-yielding, and blunter a harsher cup, roughly double the caffeine. Arabica is fussier to grow, planted higher, and repaid with a smoother body and far more nuance: fruit, florals, nuts, chocolate, depending on where and how it's grown.
Every Ueshima blend is 100% Arabica. It costs more. It's harder to grow. We don't compromise on it it's why our coffee stays smooth and low in acidity, cup after cup. Curious about the fuller picture? Robusta, and the rarer Liberica and Excelsa?

Single Origin vs. Blend: Why We Blend
Coffee tends to split into two camps: single origin, from one farm or region, built to showcase a specific terroir; and blend, combined from multiple origins to hit a specific, repeatable flavour. Neither wins outright — they're built for different jobs.
Single origin is about place: how one soil, one altitude, one climate shapes a bean, harvest by harvest. Blend is about precision: build the profile once, then hit it again and again, regardless of how any single origin shifts from crop to crop.
All three of our core blends are exactly that; blends. Our Coffee Masters have spent decades refining recipes, closely guarded, that combine beans across origins to land on the same exact flavour, bag after bag.

Our Craft in Your Cup - Japanese Roasting Masters
Roasting turns green, grassy beans into something worth drinking. It's heat, applied with precision, over time measured in seconds rather than minutes. Small shifts in either can change the cup dramatically.
At Ueshima, roasting sits under the eye of our Coffee Masters, several of them Q Graders which is the internationally recognised qualification for professional coffee tasters, trained to calibrate flavour to a degree most drinkers never notice. Every blend is precision roasted: refined over decades, not fixed to a single formula.
Broadly, roast level shapes flavour in a predictable way:
-
Light roasts hold onto the bean's original character; brighter acidity, more fruit, more floral.
-
Medium roasts balance origin character against what roasting develops; caramel, nuttiness, chocolate.
-
Dark roasts go bolder with cocoa, roasted nuts, toasted sugar; fuller body, lower acidity.
Our three blends sit at different points on that line. That's exactly why they don't taste alike.

Tokyo Roast takes its name (and its energy) from Japan's capital. Medium roast, citrus and milk chocolate, bright and quick to wake you up, the way the city does. It's the blend most often served in Ueshima coffee houses across Japan.
House Blend is our signature. It’s built to work in every context, any hour of the day. Medium-dark, with notes of caramel, granola and dark chocolate, and (like every Ueshima blend) low in acidity, so it stays smooth enough to drink black.
Fuji Mountain takes its name from Japan's tallest peak, and it's built to match: our boldest blend, dark roast, deep cocoa, roasted nut and brown sugar, strength 5 out of 5. Reach for it when you want maximum body — it holds up especially well in a cafetière, where full immersion suits its weight.
We also roast a Decaf from the same quality Arabica, with the same care, for anyone who wants the flavour without the buzz. Plus rotating speciality single origins for those who want to taste one place, unblended.
Choices. Choices.
Which of our blends is for you?
A simple way to think about it:
-
Want something brighter and lighter? Start with Tokyo Roast.
-
Want an everyday, do-it-all coffee? House Blend is built for exactly that.
-
Want maximum boldness and body? Fuji Mountain won't disappoint.
-
Cutting caffeine but not flavour? Our Decaf uses the same quality beans, minus the buzz.
However you brew, whether V60, cafetière, Aeropress or espresso; our brewing guides walk through the grind, the ratio, and the timing to get the most out of whichever blend you choose.
FAQs - What we get asked a lot!
What's the difference between Tokyo Roast and House Blend?
Tokyo Roast is a medium roast (strength 3) with brighter citrus and milk chocolate notes, while House Blend is medium-dark (strength 4), richer, with caramel, granola and dark chocolate and a fuller body.
Is Ueshima coffee 100% Arabica?
Yes. Every Ueshima blend, decaf included, is 100% Arabica. Chosen for its smoother, more complex flavour over Robusta.
Where are Ueshima's coffee beans sourced from?
From within the global coffee-growing “bean belt,” predominantly Brazil and Colombia, through long-term relationships with the farmers and cooperatives we work with.
Is single-origin coffee better than a blend?
Neither is inherently better, they do different jobs. Single origin shows off one place, one harvest. A blend is built to deliver the same balanced flavour, every time. Which is why all of Ueshima's core coffees are blends.
Which Ueshima blend is the strongest?
Fuji Mountain. Our boldest, strength 5 out of 5, with deep cocoa, roasted nut and brown sugar flavour.
