A Guide to Golden Week Japan with Ueshima Coffee Co.

Golden Week is one of Japan’s most anticipated holiday periods, taking place between late April and early May each year, it is more than a series of public holidays; it's a time when the country takes a collective pause and people take advantage of the opportunity to visit family and see friends.

Of course for us, we see Coffee as playing a big part in that!

So what is Golden Week in Japan?

Golden Week is a collection of four national holidays in Japan that fall within a single week:

Shōwa Day - 29th of April

Shōwa Day celebrates Emperor Hirohito, a former emperor of the Shōwa era. The Japanese translation for Shōwa is "shining / enlightened peace."

Constitution Memorial Day - 3rd of May

Constitution Day celebrates and commemorates the enactment of the Constitution of Japan in 1947.

Greenery Day - 4th of May

Greenery Day celebrates the birthday of Emperor Hirohito and his named as such to honour nature and the environment, originating from Emperor Shōwa’s well-known love for plants and nature.

Children’s Day - 5th of May

The final day of celebration during Golden Week and a day to celebrate children's personalities and their happiness.

Depending on the calendar, additional substitute holidays can extend the break, making it one of the longest holiday periods in Japan.

We find in Japan that it’s a rare opportunity for everyone to travel, unwind, and enjoy the seasonal transition from spring to early summer, which is such a lovely time of year.

Japanese coffee Culture during Golden Week

We think Golden Week is the perfect time to explore Japan’s unique coffee culture, where tradition and innovation sit side by side and continue to blend...

Traditional Kissaten Coffee Houses

The OG’s. Kissaten are classic Japanese cafés known for their attention to detail and calm atmosphere and often beautiful interiors.

Expect coffee brewed slowly and with care, Kissatens are designed for quite appreciation.

They are a lovely peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle outside. A relaxing step into tradition and tranquillity.

‘Tis the Season for Coffee - Try Seasonal Trends

The contemporary coffee culture in Japan continues to evolve, especially in cities like Tokyo and Osaka where you’ll find Ueshima Coffee Houses of course.

As the weather warms, coffee preferences shift, during Golden Week, many cafés introduce seasonal blends and different takes on the classics. So go and try something new!
